Taking a photography workshop with Shelley Lipke in Oaxaca, Mexico is much more than simply learning camera settings — it is an immersive cultural and creative experience led by a professional photojournalist whose life has been shaped by adventure, storytelling, travel, and human connection.

With a background working professionally for organizations including Knowledge Network, The Globe and Mail, local newspapers, and the Canadian Armed Forces, Shelley brings real-world experience and a documentary storytelling approach to her workshops. Having photographed aboard Canadian warships, travelled to more than 60 countries, and crossed the Atlantic Ocean twice by sailboat, she understands how to capture authentic moments, emotion, culture, and atmosphere through the lens.

Now based in Oaxaca, Mexico, Shelley combines her passion for photography, culture, travel, and teaching into inspiring small-group workshops designed to help photographers of all levels grow creatively and technically. Her workshops are welcoming, encouraging, and hands-on, making them ideal for beginners wanting to build confidence as well as intermediate photographers hoping to deepen their storytelling abilities and photographic eye.

During Shelley’s immersive retreats and workshops, participants learn essential photography skills including composition, lighting, visual storytelling, portrait photography, street photography, travel photography, and how to truly “see” and capture a destination. Students gain practical experience photographing colorful Oaxaca streets, vibrant markets, architecture, culture, landscapes, cafés, artisans, and local life while receiving personalized guidance and feedback throughout the experience.

Beyond technical instruction, Shelley’s workshops focus on helping students connect emotionally and creatively with photography. Participants learn how to slow down, observe light, compose meaningful images, and develop their own photographic style. Editing techniques, photo critiques, and social media or portfolio guidance may also be incorporated, helping students leave with stronger images, greater confidence, and a deeper appreciation for visual storytelling.

What makes Shelley’s workshops unique is the spirit of adventure, creativity, and connection woven into every experience.

Her warm teaching style, adventurous background, and passion for life create an atmosphere where participants feel inspired not only to improve their photography, but also to experience Oaxaca in a deeper, richer, and more meaningful way.

Workshops

Throughout the workshop, each student’s individual shooting style and photographic vision are encouraged, supported, and thoughtfully critiqued in a positive and constructive environment.

Participants receive ongoing feedback during both classroom instruction and in-the-field shooting sessions, helping them better understand composition, lighting, storytelling, and how to strengthen their visual voice.

The workshop combines practical assignments, group and individual shooting exercises, image reviews, and personalized guidance designed to help students grow creatively and technically while building confidence behind the camera.

Mutual support and shared learning within the group are an important part of the experience, encouraging participants to see the camera not simply as equipment, but as a powerful creative tool for observation, storytelling, and connection.

Oaxaca is one of the most visually rich and culturally vibrant destinations in Mexico, making it an extraordinary location for photography workshops. Known for its colorful streets, indigenous traditions, artisan culture, world-famous cuisine, lively markets, murals, festivals, parades, and striking colonial architecture, Oaxaca offers endless photographic inspiration around every corner.
